Survival Guide

NAME ________________________________ DATE _________________

Mrs.Duenas’s 6th Grade Survival Guide

(Read and keep this in your binder.)

Bring to class each day:

a.       One 2 inch three-ring binder with tabbed dividers per subject in this order: homework, math, language arts, social science and place your Agenda

b.      All necessary books and workbooks

c.       Pencils and other supplies and a large pencil box to hold your supplies.

d.      Readiness to work!

In-class behavior:

  1. Polite and cordial behavior is expected in class, on the playground, and everywhere.  Follow the Golden Rule.  Use the words “please” and “thank you”.

b.      Be on time.  Students are expected to be prepared and to be seated before the timer rings.

  1. Listen and follow all directions. When instructions are being given or when fellow students are speaking, polite and attentive behavior is expected.
  2. Daily homework is due the next day.  LP’s are given weekly and due on Fridays.  Pay attention to the due dates of long-term projects.  Don’t procrastinate.
  3. Be prepared, No exceptions!  Bring your backpack, books, work, and other materials to school everyday.  Label your own materials with your name, use permanent markers.

f.        Raise a quiet hand and wait to be called upon to speak.  Only positive and encouraging comments are expected.  Negative comments and attitudes will not be tolerated.

g.       Respect each other: No Put Downs and No Bullying.  We have a zero tolerance for those who verbally, physically, or emotionally abuse others.  Use language of respect with all people at all times. Respect the space and property of others.  If it isn’t yours, don’t touch it.

h.       Group projects are to be completed with cooperation.  On any type of work, but research reports especially, do NOT plagiarize. If you use or copy something from the internet, a book, an encyclopedia, an almanac, etc. you  must cite the source.  If you plagiarize, you will receive a 0.

i.         Use the restroom before/after class or during recesses.  Use your time wisely.

j.        Personal items such as playground/PE equipment, make-up, trading cards of any kind, electronics and phones, will be left at home/out of sight.  If you bring to school inappropriate items, and they are seen by the teacher, they will be put into the JUNE BOX.  Cell phones are to be turned OFF! and are not to be seen or heard until off campus.

k.      Bring only healthy snacks to school.  Junk food like soda or chips will be allowed to be eaten at only lunch time. Do NOT eat in class.

l.         Be sure to communicate with your teacher and parents.  Get your parents to sign whatever is needed, ASAP.  Grades are communicated with you and your parents about every 4 weeks.  If you have any issues, questions, concerns, or you don’t understand what is going on, ask good questions and talk to me ASAP.

Classroom management:

a.                   The school-wide card system is used in class and throughout the campus. Blue = good day, Green = warning, Yellow = owe recess, Orange = Time-out, phone call home and owe 2 recesses, Red = Office referral and owe X recesses, White = suspension. Pulling of cards may result in owing time after school.

b.                  Privileges and Fab Falcons are used for rewards.

Grades:

a.                Grades on each assignment are based on the points earned for that assignment out of the total points available.   Tests and quizzes, projects, and other work are ‘weighted’ differently in each subject.  But generally, tests are weighed more and then projects, quizzes, and other work.

b.               Your report card grade for each subject will be based on the cumulative points earned over the course of the trimester.  3.0-3.9 = Honor Roll; 3-5-4.0 = District Honor Roll; 4.0 (all A’s) = Principal’s Award.

c.                The grading scale:

                       100% - 90% = A = 5 = Above Standard Expectations = ü+ or +

89% - 80% = B = 4 At Standard Expectations = ü

79% - 70% = C = 3 At Standard Expectations = ü

69% - 60% = D = 2 Approaching Standard Expectations = ü-

59% and below = F = 1 Below Standard Expectations = ü-

Homework and Classroom Assignments Expectations:

  1. Assignments are to be completed thoroughly and handed in on time.  It is your responsibility to turn in the work to the appropriate place.  You are given an appropriate amount of time to complete assignments. DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!!   Use your Agenda to write in ALL assignments and due dates.  Plan out your work well.
  2. Late and/or missing work will lower your grade or can be a 0 (zero).
  3. There will be detention (owing recesses) to finish missing or unfinished work.
  4. It is your responsibility to understand the work when it is being explained or presented.
  5. Extra Credit or Accelerated Projects may be done at any time, but the work needs to be aligned to our 6th grade academic standards.  All final work must be turned in for credit 2 weeks prior to the end of the trimester.   Be sure to use a Bibliography at the end of your Accel. Project.  Cite all sources and resources used to receive full credit.
  6. Test Repair Forms.  Test Repair Forms may be used on any test or quiz, not on a final.  You must have a partner- student/parent- to help you fill out and complete.  Follow all directions on the form.  Any form not completely filled out will not be graded.
  7. Reading is part of your homework.  To show that you are reading, you must take AR tests.  If the book is not an AR book, you should be reading it.  But we can check to see if the book could be an AR leveled book—especially for higher ZPD books.

Absent Work:

It is your responsibility to obtain and complete work/tests while you were absent.  You will have one day to make up the work/tests for each day you were absent.  If you need additional time to finish your work/tests let me know right away for a possible extension.  Please see the Green Absent Folder that should be on your desk upon your return.  All work must be completed.

Student Organization:

a. Don’t procrastinate on your assignments and projects.  Good organization and knowing what you need to do is a great skill.

b. Your homework calendar, Agenda, must be copied exactly the way it is written on the board each day, and at times, initialed by the appropriate person at school.

c.  If  you ‘pulled a card’, parents/guardians must sign your homework calendar.

d.   All assignments must be kept secure in your binder or appropriate folder. No loose papers will be kept in your binder or desk.  Graded and returned assignments must be returned into the file box.  Don’t throw away your papers until your parents have seen them.  They need to know about ALL of your work.

e.    Keep your desk and binder organized at all times.  At the end of the day your desk should be cleared of all materials.  Periodic desk and binder checks will be given.

f.     The books in your desk should be stored on the left-hand side: math, anthology, and social studies.  Science books are kept in our classroom library in order, by class number.   Your spiral notebooks and folders will be stored on the right-hand side.

g.    Materials left on the top of your desk shall be kept neatly in a pencil box or other storage container, at the upper right-hand corner.  At the end of the day, you will have a clear desk top so, store your pencil box in your desk.
