Homework
III. Homework and Policies (~ 1.5 hours per night)
There is Daily Homework, Monday-Thursday, and at times, week-ends. In addition to the Daily Homework, there is a LP (Learning Packet).
Daily Homework Assignments: Subjects include — Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Students may work on assignments, projects, and/or study for tests.
There is a weekly LP (Learning Packet) given on Monday, due Friday. This packet works on spelling, Vocab300, math skills, reading skills, grammar skills, etc.
Week-end homework might be given to finish incomplete class work or to extend student learning.
One organizational tool that helps students complete their assignments is to use the “Alloted Time” schedule. At Agenda Time, we write in the approximate amount of time needed to complete a task or assignment. Students are to follow the amount of time alloted for each assignment. If an assignment is incomplete, a student may have recess or class time to complete the assignment.
A. Daily Homework
Daily homework consists of math, reading, writing/spelling, social studies, and science. Every piece of homework is explained every day. All homework is usually due back the next day. Please help your child check his/her Agenda each day for assignments and due dates. If a student does not complete or turn in an assignment, that student will owe recesses until the assignments are finished.
B. Learning Packet
Students are given an LP- Learning Packet- on Mondays. The front sheet has the listed spelling words of the week (except for the Advanced Spelling lists- that is given out as needed), Selection Vocabulary Word List (for students to study more at home), and Vocab300 Word Lists. Attached to the assignment sheet are worksheet pages to be completed by the student.
Students are to practice their Spelling by choosing 3 activities from the Menu of Spelling Activities. Students are also to study and practice their Vocab300 vocabulary words. Students to show their studies of their spelling and Vocab300 on Thursday.
Worksheets are practicing grammar skills, reading skills, punctuation/conventions skills, spelling skills, mental math, etc. Students must also record at least 1 hour/week of free reading, at their ZPD level. This is to be recorded on the front of the LP, due by Friday. Parents should sign the LP for completeness
Vocab300 (Vocabulary 300) is curriculum that I use in our class. It is a list of 20 words. Students are responsible for extending their studies these words at home. These words are working on learning Greek and Latin Prefixes and Suffixes. They are to challenge themselves to use the dictionary, study the structure of words to learn vocabulary, decode new words and will increase their word knowledge. Students are tested on Friday morning with a test: fill-in the blanks, write a story using the words, write definitions, write sentences, … Students are graded on the usage of the word in complete and full sentences; as well as good grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
C. Weekend Homework
Weekend homework is given to finish incomplete class work or schoolwork from the week. If possible, I would like parents to require students to read 1-2 hours on the weekend.
